Storage technology

The cards will be aimed at film-makers who will be able to fit 30 hours of HD video on them

Sandisk has launched the highest capacity SD cards available on the market and believes it could, in future, develop storage cards with up to 2TB of storage.
The new 512GB Sandisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I card will cost around £500 and will allow film-makers to store up to 30 hours of HD video content, according to the firm.
At present, just a minute of 4K content takes up around 5GB of storage space, meaning current offerings just aren't viable for making films or TV programmes, for example.
Dinesh Bahal, vice president of product marketing at SanDisk, said: "4K Ultra HD is an example of a technology that is pushing us to develop new storage solutions capable of handling massive file sizes.
"As an industry leader, SanDisk continues to push the boundaries of technology to provide customers with the innovative, reliable, high-performance solutions they have come to expect from us."
Although the price tag of £500 seems pretty expensive, The Verge pointed out that actually, the technology could be available at a much lower price by rival SD card manufacturers.
“SanDisk currently charges $338.99 for a smaller 64GB SD card with the same features, something you can find for less than $100 from numerous online retailers," it said.
Other manufacturers have launched high-capacity memory cards, with Lexar's 256GB SD card launched on 2012, but SanDisk is attempting to lead the storage market, launching a 128GB capacity microSD card at Mobile World Congress in February.
Although such cards won't be compatible with all smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices, SanDisk said at the time: "This 128GB microSD card is going to be popular as the preferred removable storage option, giving users fast, secure and reliable access to their personal data archives.”
