Imangi Studios, the developer of the popular Temple Run franchise, has revealed in an announcement made on Wednesday that the total lifetime downloads of the Temple Run franchise have now touched an enviable figure of 1 billion.
According to the announcement, the milestone '1 billionth download' of the Temple Run franchise came sometime between the 2011-launched original Temple Run and the last-year launched Temple Run 2.
The announcement by Imangi Studios implies that the Temple Run franchise - which was originally developed by the husband-and-wife team of Keith Shepherd and Natalia Luckyanova - has joined Rovio's Angry Birds series which reached the '1 billion downloads' marks two years back.
The popularity of the Temple Run franchise has led to the creation of the now-ubiquitous endless runner genre, which includes games that require the players to guide their character through increasingly challenging environments.
Pointing out that the Temple Run players have now run a total of 50 trillion meters, with more than 32 billion games having been played thus far, Shepherd said that the success of the Temple Run franchise has "just been amazing;" and added, referring to the game's play pattern: "If you can bring something novel and new to the table, it adds that extra excitement level and that extra component to the virality of it."
